I'm working on planning the learning design for when our associates return to the workplace. The inevitable question is coming up: should training be mandatory? I know best practice says adult learners are self motivated, and training shouldn't be mandatory. I've also consulted with legal, and we are covered as long as we make the topics widely available and over communicate how to find training. Personally, I can see both sides. Thought I would put the question out there to get some outside perspectives. Either way, my focus will be on filling gaps, knowledge transfer, and how to motivate people to want to take the training regardless if it is required or not. I did some additional research, and there is a Backfire Effect where people resent being forced into training, and actively do the opposite behavior to rebel. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
