A New Perspective on Management Communication Training: Common Ground Communication

Communicating effectively is a core competency of everyone in a management role. It is often a challenge for talent management and training professionals to find effective, innovative approaches to helping those in management communicate at the highest level possible.

This presentation, given by Dave Bennett Ph.D., provides the basics on a new approach to helping ATD professionals work with anyone in management to improve their communication. This new approach is called Common Ground Communication. It’s a straightforward model in helping management enhance their existing communication skills, do more of what they already do that is working from a communication perspective, and learn new skills.

The Common Ground Communication approach consists of four main actions: 1) establish common ground, 2) focus on the other person, 3) connect with others, and 4) share perspectives. These four actions are supported by an increased level of listening and speaking called energetic listening and targeted speaking. Managers already engage in these activities at times and often in the natural course of a conversation. The secret is teaching managers to utilize these skills and actions at the highest level possible in every conversation and in combination as appropriate in the right situations.

This presentation provides participants with a basis on which to consider utilizing Common Ground Communication in whatever the work that they do. Since ATD professionals utilize communication skills in the work that they do, this presentation will provide professional development opportunities to attendees as well.
